The Battle Helmet
When the number was not the most important thing in the room.
Jeff Hoyland worked his way off a performance improvement plan and earned a promotion to Senior BDR. Months later, he was diagnosed with throat cancer. Before treatment, he asked when he should schedule it so his absence would not hurt the team's quota.
I told him to get treated immediately. When he returned, I shaved my head, put on our "battle helmet," and surprised him in front of the team. Later, when the cancer returned, the team organized a transportation schedule to get him to treatments.
Leadership lesson: your people will remember what you did when the number was not the most important thing in the room.
